Crake

Jesus. Busy.

Was nothing to report in work, really. Cathy made some conversation with me on Friday, she was all “hey how did it go with your brother?” and I had no idea what the fuck she was on about til I checked here again. I just nodded and thought, how does she know about him. Uh, I said. She seemed to smile at me, as if she understood. I must have looked dumb. It was casual Friday so I was decked out in some Peter and Shark and I was feeling pretty loose. After some of us went for a drink in Kennedy’s. Cathy was telling me about her trip to Australia which she’s just finished. Fuck me, but she’s really boring. She has green eyes, they shimmer like a geckos skin, and her breasts are magnificent, but I was so bored by her, it was depressing. Still, this makes it slightly easier for me, because it I don’t really care about her, I can’t really be bothered about her ‘feelings’ and such shit, I can take my sweet time with her and discard her like after. I mean, it could still be too soon for me, after Maria’s accident and that. I may have once believed that maybe soon in the future I could admit that there was the possibility she was the one. But fuck me, her face… anyway, it still hurts me to think about it. Cathy was depressing me, and the rest of those guys are fucking spanners, so I legged it.

Which was fine because I had to meet Brendon and Cillian about filming the auditions. I had some notes and said I’m nominally the director here, you just bring the camera. There was a bit of dissention there, but I laid it out. This is just the start boys, I said. You’ll see, wait and see. This will be the veritas the oeuvre has been waiting for, the actual pain of a fucking no body presented with the opportunity to work at something. This isn’t going to be easy.

As it was we were there early. We set a camera up to capture the performances and we roamed about getting the girls to say some stuff. They were mostly skangers and I got the impression that that Gert had advertised on FAS or something. There was a couple of lookers and me and Cillian were over like a shot : “what do you hope to achieve from this?”

“um, I dunno”

I mean, for fucks sake, Shirley bassey they ain’t.

A couple could sing, and after a long long long fucking day myself and Gert compared notes. We called back these too girls, and Annalisa and Gillian. Both were wearing tight bleached jeans and had good arses and knee high boots. You’d think they were sisters, but apparently they’d never met before. One had a good voice, the other was passable, she might need some training. It made me feel a little better about the whole enterprise.

Gert had suggested, in order to appease me, how about we stick a couple of guys in. fuck no, I said, the co-ed band is the fucking kiss of death. One or the other. We have to have the courage of our convictions. Gert head is hanging a bit about it all. The quality of bint over here is poor. I think eurostar is chewing up all the good ones. We’re left with fucking chaff, chubby thighed scrubbers and some good looking birds who can’t move or sing or anything. I want the first big girlband from Ireland, I say. Think about it, Irish girls are famous world over for their beauty (although not in the music centre of a Saturday) and one of the girls shouted out “what about b*witched” so I had her fucked out.

I did some post production with Brendon. He looked tired so I told him to zip over the best bits on DVD and I’ll look at them during the week, and we’d go for a drink. Brendon couldn’t make it but Cillian was game. All of a sudden it’s ten o’clock and and I’m fucked, so I called Rohan. “any nose for me,”

“sure brother,” he says. “ I just sold a bag to Gert. He was with two blonde honies in knee length boots and looked like he was gonna have a good time.”

“huh” I said.

That cunt.

I spent the night calling the fucker but heard nothing from him. I tried a few of his haunts, Coyote and xxi and kips like that but no sign. I ended up going to some awful party with Cillian. Cillian can’t drink god love him. We’re at this party and I’m talking to this thin girl with straight black hair and a fat arse and her boyfriend, or some dumb cunt anyway, comes over. He reeks of booze and has the coke eyes on. “what are you doing, PAL” he says and I can tell he’s up for it.

“having a chat” I say. “why?”

“fucking talking to my bird are you” and she looks utterly disgusted and he’s got a cork accent. I fucking hate cork people and he’s no exception, he’s staggering a little bit but he’s bunching up his fists and looking for a bit of action. Fucking cunt, I can’t be bothered, but five minutes later I get out of the jacks and there he is, “you want yer go now, boyo?” I grab his hair, stupid fucking half mullet hair cut all the scobie bogger cunts are sporting these days, and mash his face into the wall about three times. He swings his arms about ineffectually. I dig him just under the ribs. The air leaves him like he was burst tyre and he doubles up, collapsed on the ground. There’s a little streak of blood on the wall. I take his can and pour it on his prone form.

“picked on the wrong cunt, cunt” I say.

I give his bird a kiss and feel her fat arse on me way out. She’s a fucking dog but I’d ram one into her the way I am tonight. That coke Rohan gave me is vicious. I hope that Gert hasn’t fucking killed those girls.

The weather is just fucking appalling on Sunday, and no word from Gert all day. Cunt.

Vinge

Not much to report. I spent a few days recovering from the weekend, sittign at home after work, having a few glasses of wine. I made dinner of apricot, garlic and thyme roasted haunch of lamb with jus. This cheered me up.

On Wednesday I’m sitting in work. I’ve been spending the week getting as many surreptitious glances of this new bird Cathy as I can. She’s small and slim, and moves like a rumour around the office. She’s an elegant construction, and my ever prying eye has garnered no ring on her finger. I ask the occasional ‘casual’ question of my acquaintances. They know little or nothing. I’m piqued.

Weds I’m sitting there, doing as little as possible when the phone rings.

“h?”

it’s my brother. Cuntstable Cuntrack of Cuntington. “what?” I ask, as pleasantly as I can.

“it’s on Saturday” oh Christ, he has this way of talking. “it” and I should know instantly or else face the full brunt of a theatrical sigh, that lasts about a week. And then the recriminations, for not knowing what it is, or for not wanting to be involved…whatever. I cut him off at the pass.

“can’t make it.” And I can’t, me and Gert are busy, with the girls. “busy”

“you can’t make it to your own fathers memorial service”

Fuck. Anyway, I’m not backing down, I can’t. Busy. Plus I couldn’t give a fuck. But I don’t like giving him the moral highground. He’ll encamp. He’ll build a Maginot line of self righteousness. But fuck it.

“can’t”

“your fucking father. This is so like you”

“yeah, like you had this much time for him while he was alive”
”what? He lived here for six months. He died in my house. I waited on him for six fucking months”

forgot about that. Too late to back down. “is that all. Yeah, you turn up at th endgame, and take all the credit”

“what are you on about. What did you ever do?”

“I was there for him”

“you visited once”

“I visited more than once, you fucker”

“once. You were drunk. You tried it on with my wife. Surely you remember, I punched you?”

“emotions were high”

“you know what. Don’t fucking come. I’m not even going to tell you where it is.”

“good on you”

“you’re a worthless shit”

“fuck you pal,” I roar, and slam the phone down. There’s an uneasy silence around me.

“are you all right” she says. She’s crept up behind me like an insinuation. Cathy. The light coming in makes gold of her red hair. There’s last summers freckles faintly recalled across her cheekbones. I’d love to ram her.

“uh” I say. “family”

“oh, yeah. I know”

“it’s my brother. My dad’s dead”

“oh god, I’m so sorry”

“no, he’s gone a while. But my brother won’t let me go to the memorial. It’s the same every year. Won’t let me go. He’s trying to exclude me from his family.”

“Oh that’s tough”

“I cared for the old man for six months,” I say. “he died in my spare room.” I have to look at the ground to stop from laughing. I’m thinking of me with a spare room. “I think I’ll go for a walk,” I say. “thanks for listening” she smiles at me. Contact!

I go for a little wander. The boss accosts me. “h”, he says” you do fuck all”

HA ha ha. We all have a merry laugh.

Later I meet Gert cos we’re doing a phone interview on Phantom fm. We want to talk about the gilrband and this weekends auditions. We’re talking to some dj, I don’t know who he is, and we’re going on… “we’ve been in the industry for so long now, we want to use our contacts and our experience and basically we want to make some money”

I laugh “it’s about time. I’ve done the ground work, I’ve played with a lot of bands, I’ve toured, produced, managed. Now I want money. Ha ha”

“a couple of simon fullers,” he says “how it goin so far.”

“it’s ok,” says gert. “the quality of girl we’re going for.. well, it’s not girl, so much. Woman. We don’t want kids. We want someone who’s been lived in.”

there’s a few seconds of dead air. “lived in?”

“yes.” Gert clears his throat. “experienced”

“ok”, says the Jerk. “I’m with gert and H, back after these”

“expiereienced” I say. “expiereienced? Wqe don’t want some alcoholic bowlers.”

“we don’t want 15 year olds either”

“whatever.”

“must be fun tho, guys” says the dj, mischievously. Like he’s taking the piss.

“well, the girlband I back up”

“what’s that” says Gert to me. I should point out we’re both talking into the loud speaker on Gerts mobile in the booths O’Neills on pearse st, which is quiet tonight.

“I said we should go for a boyband. Guaranteed money”

“bollocks”

“yeah? Look the fucking evidence. I can’t believe I’m saying this to you again.”

“spice girls.”

“a fucking anomaly. And a real fucking ugly one. They’r efucking munters and prostitutes.”

“why do you hate women?”

“I don’t hate them you fucking pranny”

“uh…. We’re on the air….. so, uh”

“yeah, sorry about that. We’ll be auditioning on Saturday”

After we hang up we have to laugh. I kow Gert just wants to offer this girls a glimpse of fame then whip it away from them again. He’s the one who really hates women.

A few Guinness that night, back to work. Cathy smiles at me as she floats by with a clipboard in her hand.

Fried Spuds

I don’t know.

Why bother anymore. There I was, trying to recover on Friday after noon, sitting in work, cos I eventually decided I should go back in, head steaming with a hangover I that seemed somewhat more regal than my modest intake the night before warranted. Well modest enough. Anyway, I was in work, sitting at the screen pretending to get shit done when one of the guys, we’ll call him anto says, “have you seen the new girl, h?” she’s in the HR office which is across the way from me. She’s only in the place a couple of weeks, and I’ve been out a while with a ‘virus’ (girlband) so I hadn’t really had time to check her out. So I sauntered over to the water cooler, which given the state of me throat wasn’t the worst idea anyway, and stick my head in to say hello to one of the girls in there, we’ll call her ‘Shelia” “hoeaya, Shelia,” I says, “oh hi H” she goes. “do you have that doctors note?” of course I’ve forgotten it, but I can get one no prob cos Rohan knows this doctor who pays him in prescriptions for a few things that apparently the Helath Service don’t have huge stashes of. “sure thing” I say, “I’ll have it Monday”. “you feeling better?” she asks, not looking up from her screen. “I vomited up my infundibulum”, I say. She grunts. “oh”.

Lost in work. Obviously. So I look over at this new girl. Lets call her “cathy”. Well, she is what they said. Long red hair that glimmers. A slender neck and thin arms. She looks up at me and smiles, demurely. I leer back, as is my way. My smile is like a laceration. It isn’t my strong suit. “how are you” I say. It comes out as a mangled croak. So I cough and clear my throat. “sorry, still not better, really” I add in, for pathos. “hi” she says. I wave awkwardly, like a reatard, and back out of the room. I’m heavy breathing by the time I get back to me desk. She’s not bad.

I couldn’t begine to describe her, not here, not in words. But suffice to say she occupied my thoughts, and my thoughts occupied my pants, for most of the afternoon. I had to break off for a few minutes to crack off a sneaky on in the jacks. There’s a certain thrill to doing that, it can’t be denied, especially, if like me, you use the ladies…

The day drew to a close, I went to the boozer with Anto and some other knobs. The guys are mostly boring fuckers. Computer whizz kids whose money all goes on hardware and games and products for their skin These people are transparent.

“does yer one not come out?” I asked. Anto shrugs.

“ain’t seen her out yet”

“them hr slags never mingle,” says Declan, who’s a nerd and a cunt. We were in the mercantile, a fatuous dive full of people who know no better.

“There’s no cool joints anymore,” I lament. “More money than taste.”

Dublin is a wasteland, I miss the days when we tried to be cool, and didn’t think it could be bought at topshop or some other dive.

We’re on the top floor There’s a girl in a short skirt with good legs standing by he bar talking to a thirty something guy with a Zidane on the back of his skull that glimmers with beads of sweat. I make with eyes. I have good eyes, the girls have always said so.

I move up to the bar so that the girl with the short skirt is standing next to me. I’m bored with here, the music is too loud, too unaware. What was that just there? The fucking Sterophonics? This place is full of people who’ll go to Slane regardless of who is playing. Robbie Williams, Shania Twain, I turn to the girl with the nice legs. This is fucking old, I say. I’m going some where else, you want to come. She looks at me, shocked I suppose, who are you? Doesn’t matter, I’m going. Wait, she says.

We’re standing out side, it’s cool, it’s dark, the traffic on Dame street is noisy, taxi heavy. I’m H, I say, I lean in and give her a kiss on the cheek. “I’m attracted to your legs”. She giggles, drunk giggles. -what am I doing, she asks?

“What’s your name, “

“Laura,” she says, “-I’m from San Francisco.”

“Your accent is so soft,” I say.

“uh-huh. You’re cute, but, I don’t know.” I have her hand in my hand and she’s kinda pulling against me.

“Listen, I got a message, my guy is in the Globe, it’s like around the corner, come in for ten minutes, we’ll see what we see. Give me a chance, it’s just, I can’t shine in that place, they’re bringing me down.” She checks her watch, she touches her hair. Okay. Okay.

Rohan is amid the throng, people around him. I kiss him on both cheeks. Whisper in his ear. Dude, sort me out. I’m good.

“You’re always good, dude.”He palms me some snout. Who’s going to notice here. My heart skips a beat. “this is Laura,” I say. “Laura, Rohan. Laura, things have changed, eversoomuch. Come with me.” We make our way through the melee to the stairs down to the toilets, i hold her against the wall, kiss her, she kisses back. Some girl leaves the ladies and I grab Laura, drag her in. There’s like five girls in there, mirror hugging, they glance, then realise how uncool it could be to stare. We wait a minute for a cubicle to empty, my hand is on her ass. I have a pre high high. “What the fuck are you doing?” Her voice quivers with what, excitement, trepidation. The room is full, she’s safe. We slip into the cubicle.

“bouncers never come into the girls” I say. “and if anyone asks, I was giving you head,” I grin, but leave it take out the coke, take out my credit card. She stares at me. Huh?

“it’s cool baby, it’s cool stuff.”

“Wait “she says, “wait,” and takes a compact from her purse, a small oblong mirror. “show a girl a classy time, for gods sake.” I kiss her. We cut a few. I kiss her. Some one is knocking on the door. I rub some on her lips and kiss her again, my hand on her crotch. She groans or something.

“lets go. Lets go,” I say, “before the ya ya sisterhood kick up a stink.”

I was born to love her, by Stevie, followed by, footloose by Kenny Loggins. Some dj is a bit self aware. I’m okay, I’m talking to Laura, she to me. Rohan is massaging my shoulder absent mindedly, talking to some one else. She’s talking. We replenish the nose reservoirs separately next time. I’m drinking vodka, she’s on bottles of Coors lite.

“Dublin’s not boring,” I promise, vaguely, “it’s not what you know… it’s who you know. Those guys in the Mercantile, fucks sake, those guys I was with, they have so much money, and kids called tristam or Bingham or fucking gandalf. That’s cool, like, people have to have kids, you know, otherwise, where are the parties of the future going to come from?”

Laura is a law student. One year over here. She blabs on like Americans do about what she’s up to, what her brother and sister and pet elk are up. How her parents divorce affected her. The usual west coast crap. It’s fine, I’m out of me head and I’ve stopped listening. I’m looking at her, but it seems as if her nose is too large, like, obnoxiously large. Maybe her face shrunk. I don’t know.

two in the morning, Rohan says down to the Village before it shuts cos he know the owner or the head bouncer or something and we’ll get a lock in all night, get to hang with the band even, if we knew who was playing.

Laura is with me, Rohan Is hanging out of the taxi outside. Come on, come on. It’s like five minutes away I don’t bother with saying. Come on. Me and Laura squeeze in the back. Rohan, some girl called Anita, some other guy, some chick with orange hair says “weren’t you in paranoid visions for a while” I laugh. “I almost was, after daf left, for a few months. But my band were about to be signed so I said, maybe later and that.” “oh yeah,” she says. “what were you called”

“the manky cunts”

“ I remember you” she says and laughs. And keeps laughing. Laura’s impressed tho.

When we get to the village we’re all smiles and how do you do’s. Bouncer looks as pleased to see us like we were and envelope full of Anthrax.

Place is full, too full, too warm. I was Born to Love her by Steveland Wonder blares, then some Curtis Mayfield. Rohan promises they’ll kick out the plebes in a minute, and we can hang like lords till the thin light of morning. Plus a bit more nose candy will help us along. Laura is sitting next to me as we’re crammed around a table down the back, she’s holding my hand and digging her nails into it, drawing blood. It’s good. It’s good. Lets dance I say, and she shakes her head. Can’t can’t dance. Rohan comes over with some drinks, after about an hour or something. Soon dudes, he says, soon. I’m bored with soon.

I get her to dance, to something, till we realise the music has stopped and the bouncers are kicking everyone out. Rohan is sitting at the back, looking cool, talking to the bouncer guy and laughing, lets just fucking go, I say to Laura. Eh?

“Where?” She’s swaying a bit, sipping some drink.

“Yours,” I say.

“Okay, okay. You’ll do.” I pretend I didn’t hear that. I get my jacket, her bag, Rohan is all… dude, where are you going. I wink, come on, the legs dude, the legs. Fair play. Nice one. No work in the morning either. Cool, cool. See you at home, muh-aybe, dude, goes Rohan. I wink. Again.

Outside is a spill, humans everywhere, like some supertanker full of drunk students has run aground, side gouged, eviscerated, bleeding babbling, swaying people. I run to the road with Lauras hand in mine, to get a taxi before the masses mobilise them selves or leave the chipper. We get one smart enough. Taxi’s have gotten much easier to catch since they started letting criminals drive them. Where to I ask, Rathmines, she says. Cool, I was hoping she wasn’t provincial. I can walk home from there. I start with the formalities by putting my hand on her lap, then I kiss her and she kisses back and it’s funny cos I close my eyes and when I open them I don’t even recognise who she is.

Lienstersquare, or somewhere, a bedroom with a tall ceiling. Books everywhere, like, the furniture, is books. She doesn’t apologise for the state of the place, rather just pulls me onto the bed which isn’t made. Cool, cool. Whatever. She’s lying there, me above her, more of those legs on view, dress riding up her hip, he hands behind her back, trying to unzip her self. Frisky, cool. I put my palm on her thighs, her eyes are closed and she makes some kind of humming sound, some kind of gnawing sound. I need to go to the jacks. “Where’s your bathroom,” I say.

“Um, uh, down the hall.”

“Uh, cool.”

I stumble back out into the hall, leaving the door ajar, slightly. There’s an open door about twenty feet away, a light switch out side. It’s a bathroom, a toilet, a shower with an old floral print shower curtain. It’s clean, I suppose the girls here take turns being embarrassed by their own pubic hair and stuff. I try to have a piss, but nothing is happening. So I stand there, and look at myself in the mirror instead. I don’t recognise these eyes. The little fella is not as, ahem, active as we’d expect in this situation. Here boy, here boy. I take the last of the coke, mere grains, rub some on my gums, rub some on him. I feel the blood start to pump. Fuck I could faint in here. I stumble back to her apartment, her room. There’s music on now. The White Album, for the love of god. My belt is open, my flies undone, my cock is rabid, she’s back on the bed, but she’s, wow, naked this time. But all I can see is this mess of books now, think, think. I want, I want. What. Come here she says. I whip off the shirt, fall next to her. She’s pale, yielding, over weight, nice legs.

“Nice gams,” I say. Jesus jesus. She grabs my head and kisses me on the lips and my fingers are fidgety and inaccurate. I stroke her naked breast, simple light from the lamp next to the bed catches stretch marks. Has she been pregnant. God have I ever had a pregnant once pregnant girl, she’s humming again. My cock is sore, like it’s going to burst. She gets up, straddles me, pulls down my trousers, pulls down my boxers, ah jesus, he looks too red. I’m going to explode, she’s whispering something, soothing complimentary, I can’t here, I can hear Lennon. You say you want a revolution. I don’t, I like things as they are. She circles my little fella, then delicately licks him for me. Fuck, I’m going to burst.

“Hold on, hold on, jesus, hold on.”

“Not yet,” she says, “I have protection, not yet.”

“Protection you mean, uh, uh, shit, a raincoat, shit.” My balls retract and I spunk onto her face. Shit didn’t even feel that one. “IT’S THE COKE,” I shriek.

She’s laughing at me, then touches her face.

“Ugh.”

“It’s… the …fucking, uh.”

“I don’t believe it. Is there any real men in this country”.

“This in’t over,” I say, trying to sound like Charles Bronson. “I can..”

McCartney: Honey pie, My position is tragic….

“uh huh,” she says, then gets up, she’s naked and her arse is wobbling slightly in the light as she makes her way behind the curtain. I’m thinking I can make her come, I can make this better.

“That was great… I say, quietly. She comes back with half a bottle of Black Bush. And a towel.

“You’re so…”

Spent Saturday in bed.

Tinkered with script on Sunday. Watched football with Gert and made some plans for the Girlband. Next time we’re gonna video the auditions. “I’ll set that up,” Gert says.

Can’t wait.

Wasted Night

I spent the day tinkering with the script, and drinking berocca and stuff like that cos I was feeling a little but under the weather, if you catch me. I bolstered myself with dinner of Spiced salad of braised beef with roasted rice, and had a few nips from the whiskey bottle, as it was cold and inclement outside.

Ah Dublin, breezy razors of ice lacerate my vision, the ground is hissing with the rain and I’m heading back to Whelan’s, where I hit the smoking area again, pint in hand. There’s no-one around yet and the bouncer doesn’t seem to recognise me, so maybe the Haines crew didn’t rat me out, or couldn’t give a good description of me. I’m drinking away but it’s freezing, so I stand under one of the heaters, but it feels like my skin is being burnt off. I talk to a guy I used to know, we played rugby together in college, he’s a fat bastard now and he’s wearing a shirt that’s too small for him. I repeatedly drawn to his man tits. They curve obliquely, like a young girls. The cold causes his nipples to erect. I feel sick, like I want to hit him, but he’s big, and a strong bastard too. Good to have by your side in a ruck, let me tell you. He’s here cos his mates told him this is where all the birds come. I don’t know, there’s some totty there aright, but I’ve gotten to the age where the youngone’s don’t interest me. I say:

“I don’t know if I could.. with one of these kids…”

“what? “ he says, all in credulous. “I personally couldn’t fuck anything over 25, loike.”

I’m sure he’s referring to livestock here, cos with that nose and those plates he calls ears picking up satellite messages from mars, he’s no prize. I force myself to focus on the girls around, same as before, slim and young and unreal. They haven’t been lived in. I don’t know. It’s existential, like, when I find myself, after a hard day or some sherries or what have, surfing the net for a bit of pre-bed porn, you know, to help me sleep, I always end up searching for mature, or amateur, or some fat German girls with huge milky tits and moustaches. I don’t know what it is. I just like the reality of those women. I mean, I don’t like it as such. Rather I hate it. But I’m compelled by it.

Anyway, I tell this fat cunt I’m going to the jacks but I leave and head around to get into the venue. Joe is there and I’m all, ah Joe, for fucks sake, how are ya? It’s been a while, and the bastard is acting like he doesn’t remember me, what? He says. After five minutes of this, I just throw him the fucking money. You’re some cunt, I tell him.

The venue is empty, they now serve the pints in plastic, rather than glass, which is unacceptable. Some band of mincers are on stage, making ugly music. They’re followed by some thing roughly similar. I get bored and leave. I don’t want to the see the Jimmy Cake enough to put up with the fuckers. I go to the band room, cos I know from experience there’s always beer there, and it’s got some fay looking cunt in a bad suit, the guy that plays the piano, and he’s there with the other one, the gay looking fella from Germany. Yo, I say and walk in, like I own the place, like I used to, rather. It makes me sad, to think of me and glen and mic when the lads played there, or that time, when he was still on the hard stuff, me and paddy Casey tried to throw the fridge out the window, or the time they threw me out on the street after I was found in the jacks with a syringe. Ha ha ha. It was a fucking joke. Rofl? Back in the day I was like the Irish banksy, you know, street art, puke as art. I went to college with a guy who had similar idea, they extended to writing his name in shit on the wall, etc. if you were anywhere with him, he’d go, eh, I’m off to the toilet, and you’d just know. There’d be some kind of political diatribe smeared in excrement over the walls.

Anyway, I’m digressing, the two saps look at me, I can tell they recognise me. I know one of them alright, when he was playing with kittser and I was playing with Karen Yello, we did a few gigs on the toilet tour in England, you know places like Southampton and Clyde and shitholes like that. Just for a crust, you understand for the thrill of the road. Karen was alright. She gave average head. I nick a couple of their cans, put one in my overcoat pocket for later.

“how’s the album coming along” I ask

“yeah fine” they mumble.

“how long’s it been?”

“sorry who are you?”

“you fucking know who I am,” I say, I can feel that fizz of aggression again. “remember Karen Yello?” he’s shaking his head, and then he says. “oh yeah” and then they both stand up and some crusty with a tache comes in and kicks me out. I head back to the gig, sipping my beer. I stay for about 3 songs. I could have joined that band a couple of years ago when they were thinking of kicking out the fat bassist, but I turned it down cos I wanted to make a documentary about Slim Bones McGee, the legendary blues singer in Alabama. I was going to go there, and live his life for a year. Imagine what it would have been like awakening every morning to the Alabama dust and all the drinking and whoring and casual heroin use that came with it. Of course the place where Slim was both born and raised, and indeed the apple tree under which he was wed and also buried are now a K-mart, remarkable only because it’s car park is a place where the local gays get together to fist each other. It cost me months of my life, realising that. Plus a portion of my elbow and half an eyebrow.

I head to roma two, have a shit burger and go home in a cab. Waste of life, tonight. Waste of fucking time.

I think I’m lonely.

The Gig

So anyway, I sat at home and make some dinner, a tagine of lemon chicken with olives, had a few more glasses of sherry that I got on the ferry last week and went to the gig. of course, the cunt at the door didn't know who I was and I wasn't going to pay in, not for Luke "sodding" Haines anyway, so I spent the evening listening to the gig through the air-conditioning out in the smoking area. Whelan’s is a terrible hole these days, really, but there was a few heads hanging around from the old days. They were all hey, how's the record, and "I hear you're writing a script" which kinda freaked me out, because it's a secret. a trade secret, if you will. I mean, there are people interested. I have this one guy in California, BUT I CAN'T TELL YOU HIS NAME, and I’d love to, believe me. So anyway, there were some cool kids at the gig, I says to Ollie Cole, you owe me a smoke, but ollies given up smoking or something. and the keyboardist from that band that were on the den last week, he owes me money cos I got the taxi one night.. anyway, he was blanking me, acting like I wasn't there. I basically just wanted to deck the fucker. I have to say, I think that sherry wasn't the mae west, as we say, I was feeling a little violent.

Barry was there, and Barry is a journo, and he's been struggling with his demons for a while now. we have a terrible conversation, because he's going "cold turkey" again.

"Dude," I say, sipping wine.

"Dude," he replies.

"How’s the addiction going?"

"I wish you wouldn’t make light of it dude."

"Light? I’m just concerned, concerned and sober, can’t you tell?"

"Jesus, H, I don’t know." He bums a smoke from me. "I don’t know."

"Life without drama is no life at all, dude," I say. "Schopenhauer said words to that effect."

"uh-huh," he says.

"Love bites, dude, "I say. "Joe Elliot said words to that effect."

"I know, dude," he says, "I know."

"You do, I can tell."

Rohan turns up, his shirt is open and he has on a gold necklace, a gold bracelet, a pinkie ring. His skin is dark, his hair is oily, he’s a Greek fucker. He winks at me. Rohan is my dealer, has been for years, from the acid years thru the e years to the high end class a years. He's good. of course, Rohan isn't his real name, ha ha ha. lol.

"Dudes," he says. "news?"

"Got any coke," I ask.

"Sure dude, you know I’m good." Barry is gnawing his knuckles at this stage, piling thru that pint of heino.

"Shit Baz, I forgot." I say and do like a Jesus face or something.

"You cunt."

"What ever." I say, and can feel that fizz of aggression again. I’d love to thump Barry, he's a self righteous tosser. I shagged his girlfriend once. she was ok.

"Dude, dudes, chill. Take a chill pill." Rohan waves some valium at me. I have to laugh.

"I’m not taking your mothers medication, Rohan," says Barry. "I need a smoke."

"Buy some," I suggest. "I Mean, with all the money you’re saving on coke…"

"Just leave it, H, it’s not a joke."

"It’s all a joke, dude."

"To you, maybe. To you."

"Look around, man, look at us. Is anything relevant anymore?" I should add that the place is full of fucking kids here. girls with flat bellies who'd tops don't meet their belts, you know. you can see their hips and their tramp stamp tattoos on their backs. little bitches.

"yeah, dude," says Rohan, "you’re like so September the 10th," and he laughs with a valley girl affectation. "like, hello." He high fives me. I’m too fucking stupid not to met his palm mid-air.

"I’d love some Zappa now, "I say, to no one.

"Just leave the fucking drugs, will you?" Barry half shouts through clenched teeth. "fuck." He walks off, waddles off, storms off like a retard. Rohan and me go through some half arsed giggles.

"But seriously, dude," he says to me "drug addiction is a worry."

The scene in that place ages rapidly, like bowie in the hunger, and I’m up the stairs to the band room. I’m quite tanked at this stage. there's a guy there and he's all "can I help you" in a brit accent. and I’m saying, I have to see Luke. "Luke who" fucking HAINS retard, I say. you can tell he wants to deck me. I walk past him and kick open the door. OI HAINES, I shout "you're a fucking dead man". Haines is a little shit, looks terrified. I have no idea why I’m doing this. The bouncer grabs me, half throws me against the wall, so I half land my knuckles onto his face. he's just some jobsworth tourmanager fuck, and he doesn't want trouble, so I kind of leave him there on the ground holding his chin and I look into the room at Haines and I just point my finger at him and mouth the words "dead"

I split pretty quick cos I want to come back tomorrow and piss in the jimmy cake's pockets while they're on stage.

Today

Today Gert and i started our auditions down the temple bar music centre. there was a queue around the corner, about 35 girls. Me and Gert sat at a table, Gert had a mocha, i didn't, and the girls would come on the stage and sing a bit, or dance, or what ever. Kris did the lights, but i suspect he was mostly stoned for the whole thing, cos he had the spots in the wrong place and the girls, bless, had to dance all over the place to try and follow the, bless.

So there's this one girl, and she's all right looking, petite i suppose you might say, and Gert is like, "what age are you love?" and she says.. "uh...fifteen", and Gert says, sorry doll, pack yer bag. So she's breaking down in tears and all, "why?" well, Gert says "you have to be seventeen", "why" she says, she looks really pissed off and i noticed there was a hi-ace parked outside and I'm hoping her old man or brother isn't gonna come in here with a pipe and wreck the place, but anyway, Gert does this huge sigh and waves his head around, "because that's the age of consent, darling" he says, like it's obvious, and the poor girl, bless, stop crying and greeting and just looks confused.

after we've seen all the girls, and it didn't take long, Gert looks despondent. "some of them were ok," i say. "they were all fucking munters," says Gert. Ah jayses, some of them could sing though, " i offer.

Gert sighs again. "it isn't about the singing." he walks off, so i had to chase him. He was supposed to pay me and Kris. I think Kris fell asleep. Anyway.

so gert owes me money, now the internet knows, and i'm not sure about our girlband anymore. i said we should have gone with a boyband. statistically they sell more records, don't they. i mean look at westlife. in fact, i wouldn't look at westlife for too long cos i'd want to brain one of them. the bloke with the potato face, you know, the gay one? anyway, gert was having none of that. it's gay, he said.

Went home, opened a bottle of sherry and got back to the script. I have an interested party in california, but it needs to be tightened he said. i'm thinking of directing it myself. i can't tell you what it's about, not yet. oh, you'll all see. Late on i'm going to whelans to see luke haines and the autuers, cos i went out with a girl about ten years ago who was in love with him, and she left me. probably not for him, but she left anyway, and it was all a bit suspicious, so i think i'll head along to that and maybe heckle him a bit. the pro's love that shit, keeps them sharp, doesn't it. darrrrrrrrryyyyyyyl, darrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyl. ha ha. lol. ;)
